Growing Pains
Photography became a tool for me to give something of myself to people, to feel a sense of belonging. Over time, it became tied to my self-worth.
Slowly, that constant push to please other people led to burnout and a loss of my passion for photography. I had to change something. I had to dig deep to find that passion again. The camera is now a way of showing people what is inside of me, rather than what I can give to others. It's still very much a work in progress.
For a long time, my lack of self-worth kept me from creating art. Instead, I was just creating pictures. I see now that there is a huge difference.
I have mastered the art of noticing, but not the art of communicating. What is it that I am lacking? I think it's identity. Coming from a place where I tied my identity to anyone and anything other than myself, I know how scary it is to look within.
I love people. I find joy in their pleasures, perspectives, and passions. That feels like second nature. Loving myself feels far more difficult.
These images exist somewhere within that tension. They are a reflection on identity, self-worth, and the quiet process of learning to grow roots of my own.
